Help needed on backfire and idle

Hello all KLR mechanics,

A buddy of mine with a KLR is having trouble with backfires during heavy deceleration/engine braking and at idle, it is not steady when adjusted to around 1400 rpm, it misses and fluctuates +/- 200 to 300 rpm.

Anybody solved similar problems already?

Thanks, I'll have a look at those two items. The first one sound like a rather large concern if the engine is sucking air directly.

Someone also suggested I have a look at the timing, does anyone else think that could be the problem.

Probably not the timing, more likey too lean an idle mixture. That goes along with the above theory of an airleak.
Check the manifold boot and clamp as suggested. if it persists;
Open up the pilot fuel screw, under the tamper proofing plug. usually two turns from lightly seated is pretty good though each one is different by nature.
