Wah wah is driving me nuts

My '99 klr 650 has developed a pretty severe wah wah sound somewhere in the drive train. The frequency of the noise increases with the speed of the bike, not rpm. The sound seems to be coming from right under my butt, although I could be wrong about that. I replaced the chain, all wheel bearings, rear wheel is straight in the swingarm. If I pull in the clutch lever, the noise goes away. Any ideas? I pulled the engine today, but am wondering if I really need to split the cases. Could the noise be coming from the clutch? A bearing in the final drive? Sprockets don't seem a likely culprit since the noise goes away with the clutch lever pulled in.

The bike has ~28,000 miles on it.

Thanks.

Try coasting down a hill with the engine off and no helmet, that's what I did to locate an odd noise and found out it was the factory front sprocket. The bushing or whatever it is behind the sprocket was wore in one area causing the noise. Noises in these suckers can be hard to locate because for some reason they always sound like they are coming from someplace else.
