Thumbs up Safety Switches-Starter Question

Still learning my way around my 2006. Just finished cleaning my carb and installing a Stead "choke" knob. While I had her that far down, I pulled the sidestand safety switch stuff and installed a jumper wire. Must have done something right (or didn't do something wrong) as she fired right up. Best she's ever started. Which leads me to my question. This bike must be in neutral AND the clutch lever out, or the starter won't spin. If she's in gear with the clutch pulled in, no starter. If she's in neutral with the clutch pulled in, no starter. Is this the way the KLR is supposed to work? Seems a little odd to me. I can't swear she's all original as I'm at least the 3rd owner. The only other electrical mod that I've seen is the installation of heated grips, not even sure they work. I know I need to get an operator's manual as one didn't come with the bike.

From my Operators Manual (also see attached):

Starting the Engine:
* Turn the fuel tap lever to the "ON" position.
* Check that the engine stop switch is in the "RUN" position.
* Turn the ignition key to "ON".
* Make certain the transmission is in neutral or the clutch is disengaged.

I should think that the last line should answer your question about how it "should" work.

Try loosening the 2 tiny phillips screws under the clutch safety switch on the hand lever and sliding the switch housing Rearward. Or Inspect to see if its internal sliding contact has been LOST. Or jumper its wires also.

I would think starter should work no matter in gear or not as long as the clutch is pulled in. Thanks, Blue.

Thanks, pd. Think I'll try adjusting the clutch switch. I'm planning on bypassing it eventually.
