If you think that is an "alternative", you need to go read and understand what the Thermo-Bob does.

Thanks for the well written and illustrated pdf. I'll have to put some thought to this and perhaps do some thought provoking experiments.

Though I must say that I had huge temp swings before the mod... now, not so much. Maybe 3 "needles" worth.

I would probably add one more hole

I'm of the Internet Minority opinion: "Needle swings" do no harm. Materials, design, and clearances, etc., accommodate the engine temperature differences within the KLR650 engine's heat cycle without causing component malfunctions.

That said, I must agree with others posting on this thread , . . . drilling weep holes in the thermostat do not a Thermo-Bob make!

Additional holes in the stat would increase coolant flow, but reduce its ability to slow flow for warmup, as it was intended. Hotter weather you probably would see an improvement in less needle movement, but that’s not necessarily a good thing. Controlled flow allows the coolant to absorb heat. Exactly how much affect not absorbing heat like the manufacturer designed is anybodys guess.
If drilling holes in the stat works for you in your situation/climate, then go for it.
The T Bob is intended to help maintain an even coolant temp around the entire cylinder possibly reducing or eliminating cylinder warp. It also helps get coolant up to temp faster.
Drilling holes in the stat does neither of these, doing that may even have the reverse affect.

Yeah, not a fan of the added holes; there is a cheaper alternative to a thermobob if one is so driven, I couldn't be bothered myself. Google NormK's thermobob alternative.

And I'm of the internet majority opinion that stabilizing the KLR's temperature swings can only help extend engine life and reduce bore distortion.....which is a known KLR issue.

Cheers,
Dave
