Did the same... foil and super bright LED in the tail; much improved light output. Also got the idea here (or, was reminded) to add a strobe to the Taillight and I like it alot. Anything to draw attention to my 'stop much faster' bike's tail light being on so cagers know to stop too!!! NOW!
Lights are almost always one-a the first things I change when I pick up an old vehicle. When I got my first International Scout, I merely added foil (to all indicators) and new bulbs (LED not really around then) and then replaced the lenses (Giddum Up Scout and Super Scout Specialists... wow, who knew support for that vehicle was so easily found). It made the vehicle SAFEr. And it made it look better, too... but I was more interested in being seen, especially during the day (Halogen headlights, too). The Tail lenses were pretty much pink when I got the Truck!!!
On my '03 KLR though, I replaced OEM Turns with LEDs, replaced the Flasher with LED Flasher (so they'd flash right... TomS saved me from adding 4, count 'em, FOUR, resistors... that get very hot BTW), added diode to DashTurnIndicator (so either turn being on would correctly flash the dash indicator), added more correct wiring and a Relay/Switch for fogs, and re-constructed the Tail loom (it was held together with bobbypins and bubblegum). I scored some new Switches on the cheap, so replaced those as well (Headlight, On/Off). DPO got one thing right... he already had LED Headlight... YaY! Lastly I added a light circuit to have a light in my trunk. It even has a red gel on the lens so I'm tactically correct!
I don't think I should EVER have to deal with electrical issues on the road, so I set up my vehicles to eliminate the 'tail-chaser' of an event. I HATE diagnosing Electrical, I suck at it, and even though I have two Multi-Testers, I pretty much don't know how to use them (shame on me).
Your bike's coming (back) together MAAAN... NICE!
