New to me 03

Greetings! I just purchased my dream bike, an 03 straight out of the New Orleans ghetto. At one point, it had been well loved, as evidenced by some thoughtful add ons in the past. Time, and neglect however, have put it in my budget. I've had DR's, Vstroms, etc...but always wanted a KLR.

Anyhow, I'm stripping it down. I've cleaned, inspected and blue loctite'd all bolts that warrant it. Replaced (thank GOD) non-stripped, missing footpeg bolts. And discovered other goodies along the way. Holes in airbox, both up and downstream of the air filter, thanks to a DG slip on and midpipe that was half assed. It also burnt a section of the rear fender. The carb innards look spotless, so maybe no ring damage. Dead battery and two flat tires ( "happened RIGHT before you got here to buy it,man"). Whatever.

I fabbed a fix for the airbox, being too cheap to buy one. I high temp'd RTV with yes, aluminum foil, to seal the holes and fabbed up a heat shield out of some thin aluminum and slotted hose clamps. I dropped the silencer down a bit to prevent further damage.

Question... I'm not sure if the doo has been done. It has 32k on it, and when I jump start it (hopefully just a dead battery that won't take a charge) it fires right up, and I can cut the choke off in about a minute. Can I see if the doo has been done, or is stock without buying the tools first? I think the rotor or something looks to be blocking it from total view. I want piece of mind and reliability.

Next is new chain and sprokets, tires, and fork oil.

Lastly, if anyone has a gen 1 skidplate, I sure could use it until I buy a good one.

I hope to pay it forward to yall when I get her up and going.

Congratulations on the new baby in the family. I am on my second and love them. I do not believe you can see the doo without exploratory surgery. Someone else may have an idea on that.

I have a Gen 1 skid plate you are welcome to have. If your in DFW you can pick it up or I can ship if you cover the cost.

I've about gone blind on Youtube. Turns out you can "kinda" tell if it's been replaced...something about looking for machining marks on the EM version as opposed to a stamped unit.

Re: the skidplate, that would be great! If you want to PM me here, we can discuss shipping costs i.e., Paypal or however you want. My zip is 39401. Too far to drive
I'm really enjoying the KLR world so far!

Welcome to the forum, Adventuredad. Yes one can make a determination about the doo-hickey, if one is familiar with their differences.

Here is a link to some of the Best KLR Info currently on the net, by our member/moderator Tom Schmitz.

Start with his doo-hickey info. And then go to his table of contents, I think you will see what I mean. Maybe you have already found his site?

Congratulations!
You did well! After all a real toy requires playing with it.
And of course, welcome to forum.
