Tom,

The wiring loom was unchanged from 1987 to 1989. The next harness was in place from 1990 to 2002. In 1990 they changed the CDI adding a single wire. They added a wire to the loom that comes off of the starter relay to connect to that additional wire on the CDI. No harm would be done by not connecting that wire to anything. That is the only change I am aware of.

The next harness version went from 2002 to 2007. I don't know what the change was; it might have had something to do with changing the goof-ass Rube Goldberg kickstand safety switch mechanism. Dunno.

The 1990-2002 harness is available new, but is spendy at $160. Careful and patient shopping on e-bay should get you one for $50 or less. You need to be careful of the condition, so good pictures from the seller are important.

This one looks pretty good https://www.ebay.com/itm/2001-87-07-...temCondition=4

It has a chopped-off connector, but it looks to be on the rear sub-harness. I'm not sure, but it might be the license plate light. Shrug.

Yes, the differences are minor. I believe that the only difference is the Y/R wire, but any others would likely be easy to deal with. If your harness is off the bike or your bike is mostly apart you could compare the e-bay pictures to your connectors. If you have a manual you could also examine the '87 wiring diagram, comparing it to the later diagrams. As mentioned, all I see is the Y/R wire.

There are some tricks to finding stuff on e-bay. The first is patience, but that's only good if time is on your side.

Another is to search for 'kl650' rather than, or in addition to, 'KLR650'. Most sellers are dismantlers who don't know the KLR well and they will use only 'KL650' and not 'KLR650' Their stuff doesn't show up in searches and that can be to your advantage. I have found a lot of good stuff, cheap, that was listed as KL650 and KL600 (when I'm looking for KLR600 stuff).

This, for example: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1712-Kawasa...temCondition=4
