How long(yrs or miles) do KLR coolant hoses last?

Providing the bike hasnít ever been overheated, how long do these hoses last ? Letís say I bought a 2002 w/ 10 k miles. The hoses are 18 yrs old. If they are still plyable, could ( or would ) you use these over ? Iím not a tight wad, and maybe a dumb question, but Iíve seen many older auto coolant hoses 20 yrs old still look good inside and out. Not spongy or hard. Your take on this issue. If /when I tear down a Gen 1 KLR for oil psi, oil flow mods, Do-Hicky , oil screen clean, Thermo Bob, since every thing is apart any way- I would be inclined to replace all coolant hoses yes/no ? Also to those that have, what is approx cost of all hoses. Thank for your replies.

I'd be thinking after almost 20 yrs, I would change them before I ventured far from home with it. That said, it would depend on where the bike was stored. an 18 yr old bike with 10K sounds like it spent a lot of time in storage or just not ridden much at all. A couple things come to mind when it comes to rubber deterioration. Oils and light. Some oils can make rubber soft and swell causing a weak area that may burst on you. The other rubber killer is sunlight. If the bike was stored clean and in a dark area or covered out of direct light, the hoses may very well be just fine, but since you're going to be cutting and fitting a thermo bob anyway I'd spring for a couple hoses if it were my bike. Don;t know what cost is. I'd go with auto parts store fuel lines and vacuum line to save a few $, but since the coolant hoses are molded to fit around things without kinking I'd go factory on them.

Inspect the lines but age alone isn't a good reason to change them and I suspect most KLR's are still running the original hoses. Both my 2000 (3000 miles) and my 2001 (20,000 miles) have the original hoses and I have no plans to change them. I did take a very close look at them when I installed my thermobobs.

I had a 'Cuda with all the original belts and hoses; 35 years old at the time and they were perfectly fine.

My 1987 -A1 with 83,000+ miles on it still has its original hoses on it, and it does spend 5-7 months of the year outside.
