You have not confirmed fuel flow out of the fuel tank & into the carb for Me!! Have you measured how much fuel is IN the float bowl? DID it Run Out of Gas, because someone turned the petcock off?
I doubt very much if the doo-hickey has anything to do with your no-start issues. The engine did Not Stop Running with terrible noises, did it? Is the engine oil Full or so far below the oil window that leaning far Right the oil still can't be seen?
Carb off is as Wide open as one can get, yes you can measure engine compression with the carb off.
Do you have access to compessed air?
One could braze or solder an air fitting to a gutted spark plug body & screw it into the plug hole. Then with regulated air pressure applied, rotate the engine towards compression stroke. Dis-connect air & turn engine to TDC. Re-connect air & listen/feel for massive air leakage.
