Im trying to find a part.

Well today is payday and I feel like messing with the klr a bit more, but I’m stuck in my search as I can’t find a name for what I’m looking for. Recently ordered a new stator because the wires outside of the case were dry rotted and damaged. The little black box inside the cover is the part I’m trying to find as the wires are completely gone. If someone can name the part or maybe point me the right way. I’d be greatly thankful.

The part varies according to generation. I believe you have a Gen 1, a 1987. That part is officially called a Coil-Pulsing and is part number 59026-107. It is pretty spendy at about $90.

It is often called a 'pick-up' coil or 'timing coil' as it picks up a signal from the rotor for the timing of the ignition spark.

You may find it cheaper and in OK condition on e-bay as a used part. It was used from '87 to '07 so if you find one from '07ish it ought to be in good shape and 20 years newer than your part. Right now the cheapest one on e-bay is about $60. Meh.

found a few, i think i can get it for 110 for new but while im looking, i found one from an 08 sees to have a different connector, but its cheaper. wondering if i could swap out the connector and it would be fine. i see one from an 04 but the wires that exit the case look a little wore and dryrott.

Might be unintended consequences, jumping generations with a pickup coil.

Ignition systems remain fundamentally different at the 2008 model year and later.

DISCLAIMER: Don't know whether pickup coils are functionally interchangeable over the generations or not. Suspect they might be, "not."
