compatibility over many years

I am new at this so look forward to contributing. Can anyone advise regarding the compatibility of a 2010 KLR650 with a 1985 KLR600? For example will the new motor fit in the old bike?

There is Not much interchangeability between the 600's & the 650's, except Internal engine parts.

The lower geared transmission cluster & clutch from the 600 can be installed into the 650's. And then the 600 kickstarter parts can be fitted.

Member Ian Hopkin from the UK has fitted an entire 650 into a 600 frame, but there are enough Ignition differences that most people wouldn't attempt it.

From the common "Base" service manual (KLR600), the ignitions between 600s and Generation 1 KLR650s appeared similar. Not so with Generation 2s (as in, the 2010 bike mentioned in the IP)!
