Removing rear wheel, taking caliper off?

I've had the rear wheel off many times but today I could not get it back on!

The caliper and the rotor just didn't want to mate up. The pads were not locked up, there seemed to be enough distance between them for the rotor to slide into, but it just wouldn't. So after an hour I gave up and here I am. I gave it a solid go but sometimes it's best to just give it a break and regroup!

Now I'm wondering if it would be easier to remove to caliper, install the wheel and then re-install the caliper? Is that a valid way to reinstall a rear wheel? Or is it not advised to do it that way?

I just went through the exact same thing. Frustrating as all $&%!
Slow and careful perseverance paid off in the end, but you'd think it would be easier!

I always remove the caliper. Gives me a chance to check pads and how the bracket slides on the pins on the caliper.

Not sure how different the Gen 1 and Gen 2 caliper is, but the factory shop manual for the Gen 2 says to remove the caliper and then remove the rear wheel. I have always removed the caliper on all my bikes when removing the wheel. Much easier to get it off and on. Then the caliper just slides back on. Also like Chuck said, good time to check the pads and caliper.

Yep, removing the caliper is the best way on the rear wheel.

To further answer...anti seize for adjuster bolts. Obviously, you need to make sure the threads are clean and in good shape first.

I too remove the caliper, but if you donít at least be sure to put pressure on the pads and push them back into the caliper. It only takes a bit of tension on the brake lever to push the pads in and prevent the rotor from fitting.
