Pelican 1430 side cases

After reviewing the various types and cost of side cases I deceded on the Pelican 1430 top loading cases. I purchased two of them from the Case Club in Anaheim CA. The cost was less than $140.00 including shipping.

For the mounting bracket I went with Moto-SportPanniers. A bit pricy at $240,00 delivered but I liked the round tubing construction better than the square tubing used by the other manufactures. The brackets are high quality and fit the bikes mounting holes quite well. The only downside to the brackets is that the rear side covers have to be cut out to clear the way for the upper mounting bracket.

Rather than using the conventional mounting clips that are for sale. I decided to use the mounting holes in the bracket and bolt the case directly to it. M 8-1.25 x 30 mm long bolts were used. Inside the case a flat washer and o-ring and between the case and the bracket a 1/2 ID x 3/4 OD tappered toilet washer was fitted. This gave the assembly a cushion between the case and bracket and a good seal inside the case

For the bottom clip I glued two pieces of 3/4" x 1 1/2" of oak together, rounded the edges and painted it black. I mounted it to the case with a flat head machine screw. Again I fitted the inside of the case with an o-ring and flat washer.

Before I drilled the holes in the case I made a plywood template. I measured the locations for the holes, and drilled the template. Once I was satified with the fit of the template on the bike I drilled the cases for the bolts.

The cases fit quite well with the bike. The are a little small but adequate and are relativy easy to remove (13 mm wrench required).

Excellent DIY post. Like the mix of materials. Guessing you are a wood worker. Are the hinges on the inside or outside? Very nice looking luggage. Two new (to me) vendors 8^)

I love Pelican cases, but I just wish they'd have something about 25% bigger in the same design..
Oh, and nice BMWMOA sticker!! Been a life member for something around 15 years..
