Adding Oil Almost Every Ride..Normal???

That sums it up.

Adding about a quart every 1000 miles or so....Normal???

OK to add same weight but different brand? I have some expensive Honda Oil I put in my gsxr I need to use.

ridgerunner -

Not unusual for the 08+, especially when ridden hard.

For your 07, that seems like kinda high oil usage, unless you ride at really highs speeds all the time.

How much time do you spend over 5000 rpm in the course of a 1000 miles?

It should be OK to add oil of a different weight, happens all the time and the earth is still going around. Remember, though, that in the grand scheme of things oil is cheap. Use a good oil, like Rotella, and change it out every couple thousand miles.

Too much

Well, it varies. I try to keep the rpm 5500 and under. Nothing sustained on the freeway, but I get on the gas hard in the canyons...which is where I usually ride. So, riding the bike hard...need to add oil more often...yes?

Thanks for the response.

Sean

Sean,

Generally, yes.

Keep an eye on it, keep it topped off, and figure you need to do something if the consumption increases.

Some folks get wigged when an engine uses oil; I don't.

By the way, I edited my post above while you were responding. To recap - use good oil and change it often.

Absolutely!! And my 02' uses about 3/4 of a quart in 1000 miles.. I bought the bike with 1300 miles on it and it's done it since then. I'm now closing in on 20K and it's the same..

Engine runs fine, starts perfectly, and I just check the oil and add as needed.. I also typically run the oil level a bit over the window because I know it's going to use some..

I change oil every 2000-2500 miles with dino Rotella and Emgo filters.

I've read several times about installing a PCV valve which is supposed to lessen or eliminate oil usage. Do a search here about the Mercedes valve modification.. I have the valve, but just haven't gone through the effort to do the mod..

Try adding a PCV in the crankcase vent line. It's simple, cheap and helps reduce oil consumption.

Now you made me feel bad.. I had to log in at Patman's site to view the modification, and it's a fantastic writeup.. (I need to do this mod)

What makes me feel bad is that I joined his site in April of 2008 and have never made a post..
