Why is the air filter left out of jetting threads?

Unless I'm totally missing the boat, why is it that air filters are left out of the equation so much when we're talking about jetting? Wouldn't the type of filter, oil and oil amount affect the jetting? Are we assuming the filter is perfectly oiled and cleaned when we talk jetting?

john37-

Whenever we talk jetting we try to be comprehensive, because you are right. One can't change the jetting without considering what may have been done relative to the snorkel, L-Mod, the needle, the pipe, etc. Jetting is not about swapping parts for the sake of swapping parts, it's about hitting a correct mixture with the setup you have.

I think we don't mention the filter because it's assumed that the owner will be mindful of it's maintainance and perhaps because the filter is not often considered to have great affect on performance as long as it's properly maintained.

Thanks for pointing this out;I'll be mentioning that I use a stock filter in any posts I make relative to jetting or carb issues.

It does seem to be the most popular after-market filter. I've never heard a bad word about it. Have heard the K&N performs worse than stock, but I think they've always been designed for WOT applications.

I've stayed with the stock filter because I have three of them thanks to friends who were tossing the stockers after installing a K&N.

That's what I use in all 3 KLR's, the KDX, KX and the RM I just sold. Never had an issue with any one of them. As a matter of fact, if UNI made filters for a Dodge Caravan, I'd have one!
