rough midrange

My 96 KLR 650 with 20,000 miles began to run roughly in the midrange. It runs fine at idle and flat out.
I have tried swaping the carb., swaping the ignition system, adjusting the valves, and checking all vent hoses. I'm out of ideas. Can someone help?

Did either carb have the "22 cent mod"?

It slightly richens the midrange when your bike is running
on the needle, not the pilot or main jet?
