Question Cam Bearings and Oil Pressure

So here is my questions, I am new to KLRs. I am a bodyman by trade, but I have done my share of knuckle bustin wrench work. Built some very fast cagers ( V-8 )big blocks. I had my share of crotch rockets and cruisers, now my son is old enough to ride and this is what he picked for him and I, a 650 for me and 250 for him. Anyway from what I read on this forum (The BEST)! and others is after the engine is at running temp the oil pressure is anywhere between 11 and 21 psi. Dont seem like a lot, this would make sense to me why the exhaust cam bearings seem to go south. Now like I said I have built some very nasty bigblocks, oil pressure is important, but volume is where its at. When I would have cranks done for my motors we would cross drill and chamfer the oil holes along with a taper in the trailing direction so the oil would almost have a scavenging effect coming out of the journal. So do you think doing the journal holes in the cams like I did my cranks would have a benefit for better lubrication. What about enlarging the feed holes in the main cam bearing caps so more oil can get through.

As for the oil pump is there a performance one or is the stock all there is. Is there a way to increase pressure with this pump? Or am just trying to reinvent the wheel?
My mind is always thinking, of what I dont know!
Keep up all the info.

First things first, I guess. While I have heard of a couple of instances of cam journal problems, I don't know that it's really a weak spot on the KLR. I know of no mods or aftermarket oil pump bits, either.
However, there have been LOTS of reports of oil pick ups being blocked, so you should definitely check that. It involves going into the waterpump side and is a bit involved if I am remembering correctly. I haven't done it (should!) and will take a look at the manual on what's involved.
As to your plan with the oil feed and cam journal work, I can't see where it would hurt.

How about a 'Blast' from the Past?

Are you still among this viewing audience?
Have you reviewed my oil pressure related threads?
How about Tom S. (motosapien's) current thread, '09 oil experiments?
Have your questions been answered? It is still an on-going project!

275 miles, on my bike Sunday! And still on, "ON" fuel valve position! I even saw 105 MPH on asphalt and 90 on Gravel!

Modify at "YOUR OWN RISK"!

Still riding my 1987 KL650-A1. 85,000+ miles & counting
