Doo-hickey ? by newbie

Ok, in my reading about KLR's over the years, I've heard all about the doo-hickey replacements. I have known in the past what that involved and why it was needed, but now can't remember the details. And how necessary is it on the new generation KLR's? The one I bought is an `09 with 1700 miles. I've wanted a KLR for a long time, but came up on this one at a bargain unexpectedly after selling the bike I had a little quicker than I thought I would. Everything just fell in to place pretty quickly this time. Fill me in on the details and also what happens when it fails. Thanks for your patience as I'm sure it's been discussed many, many times on here.

Well, you probably know all about opinions...mine would just be another. I'm going to link you to a few articles written by a man who was a pioneer in the doohickey replacement game.

So, to sum it up, there haven't been any confirmed doohickey failures on the Gen II [08-up] bikes that I am aware of. Seems pretty unanimous among the knowledgeable that the factory doohickey spring is junk. It would be a good idea to start setting up the time to replace the spring. It will require the offset wrench and rotor puller as far as specialty tools. You may want to consider the inspection port kit Top Gun Motorcycles offers. It looks like it takes the "I dunno" out of the equation when you start wondering about how your doohickey is doing.
