Please don't take this as any expert advise on wrenching, I have never done a job like this. So any advise would be accepted.
Scanning CL one day I came across this KLR only a few miles from my house. The ad read, just needs a $12 part but I don't have the time to put it in??. Price $1250. So I call the kid and take a look at it, complete bike but its not working. I asked the kid to describe the last time it ran or what happen when it stopped. "Ummm, well it kinda, I don't remember" and then my friend tried to fix it. So then I told him I would give him $500 but I wanted to check for DMV fees and he said ok and I took the vin#. At home I did a check and $140 of fees are due. I email he and said I could only give him $300. The next day he call and asked if I could go $320 because he wanted to buy a drum set?? OK I said have the pink ready and I will be over at 9am.
Maybe we can get lucky, so lets see what we have. First I want to pull the left side and check the Doo, now I only have about 4 weeks of experience with the KLR of just reading forums and up to now have read alto about the DooHickey.
After pulling the left outer case I can see it was in the weather a little, so what I think and lucky I guess they stop at this point was they relished they could not get the flywheel off.
It took some heat to free it up and stripped out one puller and then it came off.
Let me back up a bit, the motor would not turn over but it did move a bit back and forth.
Ok lots of slack in the chains and the Doohickey is just laying on the bottom and I see the broke spring.
Now I pick out the pieces and try to turn the motor and it still jamming so I guess the piston is hitting a valve, as loose as the cam chain is it must of jumped. So off with the head.
With the head off now it all spins free, it didn't appears that the piston hit hard because it looked pretty good as far as no big dents or chunks on top.
So for the final look over for the day I notice that the balance r sprocket on the crank is shot.
Now Im told that even though this part is listed as a separate part #12046 for $47 is that it can't be pulled off the crank and that I would need a complete crank. So maybe my next step is a crank off e-bay. This is where I'm at and any suggestion are welcomed.
Time 3 hours.
