mefo tires 130 80-17

I was just informed by the guys over at klr650.com that the mefo 130 80/17 is on recall, he told me the are having a problem with the tread splitting, there were a few cases where it split all the way through and blew the tubes. so if anyone is riding the 130-80/17 please look into this!

yeah, i know twisted throttle is the direct importer for mefo's and they havent officially sent out a recall, but i wouldn't ride a tire that has total tread failure. the guys over at klr650.com have a few horror stories about the mefo's and have offered to buy them back if you bought from them. also they dont carry them anymore. i've read on a few other sites about people having the tire fail on them. im going to contact twisted throttle and see what they will do about it. i'll let you know how it goes.

I'm actually on my 2nd set of MEFO's without incident. I've had nothing but good experience with them. Thanks for the news though, it is something that I will keep an eye on in the future as well as other riders too, I'm sure.

so i talked to the guys at twisted throttle, they say that there is nothing wrong with them and that it happened in the past and that the problem was fixed. however i've read some posts as recent as a few months ago from guys who said that they have had it happen to thiers almost consistantly around 4-6 k miles. also when they ran it at lower air pressures.

I don't have my paper work in front of me but I've been getting easily 7,000 miles out of them with a lot of two-up riding. At this point, the tires seem fine with no abnormal appearance. I'll have to go check my paper work to see about exact numbers on the mileage.

Hopefully we will get more input from other riders using the MEFO's.

A question re the Mefo's....How stiff are the sidewalls?

Last Friday, at 50 MPH, I ran over something & put a very small hole in the tire & tube. Before I had a chance to respond, I was on the ground sliding across the on coming lane. Fortunately no oncoming traffic & I was wearing ATGATT, other than the helmet, jacket & pants being toast, just a little road rash where the jacket wore through.

After I got help getting the bike out of the ditch, I had a hell of a time turning the bike around to get it into a pull off area. With the beads broke the tire flopped around & wouldn't turn.

Been rethinking the incident & one is to have tires with stiffer sidewalls so maybe the beads would stay seated....just a bit longer to give a chance of slowing down. After years of riding & not ever having a front tire go on me I'm a little gunshy! You see, the next morning (Saturday) as I was getting ready to leave the motel, I noticed the front was flat again! This time there was a thorn about an inch long stuck in it.

So how 'bout them sidewalls on the Mefo's?

I've only run the OEM tires when I bought the bike then switched to the MEFO's so I don't really know how stiff the sidewall is compared to other tires. Sorry I can't help you on that. I am thinking of trying some TKC80's and maybe after changing those out, I can offer a little more insight.

Mefo tubes, not mefo tires. The issue seems to be the valve stem. The valve stem can separate on any tube if the tire is under inflated and heavy braking load applied. Don't put the lock nut on the valve stem and you can reduce the chances of this happening. If you read further down the on the forum it seems that some of the people think the originator of the info may be bool sheeting everyone. Don't believe everything you read on the .net site. It is as much a rumor mill as anything else.

I went to the Mefo web site and there is no mention of a tube recall.

it's also the treads though, ask the guy over at klr650.com he has a tire sitting on his desk that was ripped from this problem, the guy was pretty bruised up and there was a lot of damage on the bike. this issue needs to be addressed and it seems like everyone is ignoring it.
