1st to 2nd Clunk and piston slap under 3K?

1-2 shift clunk and low speed piston slap? How much is a 2011 supposed to be equipped with from the factory?

On the 1-2 clunk if I do EVERYTHING perfect (ie my wife isn't on the back, higher RPM and a quick / firm "up and back" on the shifter) it's not bad at all. Otherwise it is "significant." My Gen 1 I don't remember having quite as much, it was used when I purchased it though.... and VERY used when I sold it.

Oh, 600 miles and I've changed the oil twice (Rotella T-6 synthetic 5-40.)

Piston slap under 3K... they all still do this don't they?

Anyway, thanks and what not.

AJay112 -

My 1-2 shifts are horrendous.

The piston-slap sound - isn't that the "KLR Sound"?

Just making sure it was still part of the "KLR experience" with the 2nd Gen bikes...
EDIT: Horrendous you say? Mine is just, "significant." What color is yours?

Mine started out as a blue '08. It's now black and silver.

My 1-2 shift usually goes 'krk-krk-clunk'. Occasionally it will go 'snick'. Anything worse than 'snick' is horrendous.

Yeah, mine sounds ugly sometimes. Makes me more diligent about preloading. If I do it right I can avoid the feeling that my bike has PMS.

I bet it's the paint. Did you do any dyno runs before changing color?

Doing much better. It's just like putting any other Ford 8N tactor into road gear now.

Shifting with a little preload is the key... I usually do this on the track and clutchless though
