08 oil burner:(...16 tooth sprocket

once again reminding the readers I am not a gearhead...

Talking to a guy who has a gen 1 klr he mentioned I might try using a 16 tooth sprocket, buy doing so I would reduce the rpm because it might only be burning at high revs.
whats your take on the matter?

What kind of riding do you do? You're sacrificing a lot to bring those high rpms down. Personally, I'd rather just add oil when needed.

Might help. I have a 130/90 rear tire which changed my gearing dramatically. I would assume it's similar to putting on a 16 with a stock size tire.

I changed to a 16t sprocket on my o8. At 120 kph the change in rpm's is 350 less +/- than with stock gearing. This brings the revs just below 5000 which is what I wanted for the highway. You do feel the difference in first gear but not enough in my opinion to make a difference. I ride 60% road and 40% off road and it works for me

Yes. 130/80 is stock, so 130/90 is taller. A 16 front is cheaper though. Give'r a try.

I just put a 16t in a couple weeks ago. I love it. I don't really notice much difference on the low end of each gear, but there is a noted difference on the high end, more mph and less rpm.
