Gas mileage

What kinds of things affect gas mileage?
I have a 09 with 3600 miles on it, weigh in close to 300lbs and drive mostly paved roads with as much dirt and gravel thrown in that I can find. Just filled up and only got 40mpg. I consistently get around 42-43mpg. Don't think I ever got better than 46 (once). I drive highways at 60mph and avoid interstate unless absolutely necessary.

I've done the .22 mod and mixture screw adjustment, that's it.

With this last tank of gas I had hit some atv trails. Would that increase gas consumption if I ride it "bogged down" in the wrong gear?

I'm close to your spec's, just did valves, swapped out all 4. Now getting 52mpg, was getting 46-47 avg. The difference could just be between the winter/Summer fuel formulas, winter will generate less MPG.
My buds 09 had <2500mi on the clock and all his valves were out of spec as well.
IIRC it is a common issue, check yours.

Riding trails KILLS your mpg worse than high speed runs.

I've got an 09 with about 3500 mi. No mods at all and I haven't gotten my valves done or any other service other than oil changes. I average 55 mpg and have gotten as much as 60 mpg riding on local roads (no highways). I weigh about 180 lbs.

Thanks for the replies. I was hoping that the trail riding would be a main culprit. I'll have to look into the valve issue soon.

I ride about 50/50 and the last three times I have checked my mileage was 52-54 mpg.

I've got a 2009 with 4k miles on it. It's stock except for a 16t front sprocket. I drive with a very gentle right wrist. At my last fill-up, I had gone 225 miles and took on 3.7 gallons 87 octane regular.

I average about 53 mpg. 2009 with 2500 miles, stock tires, mostly commuting on dirt roads and pavement (50/50). The .22 cent mod and drilling the slide didn't seem to have any impact on the mileage.

I've gotten a high of 62 mpg. When I first started riding I was very light on the throttle and kept rpms down. Since then... My 2003 commuter KLR set up for street with stock gearing gets 48-52 mpg during my commute up and down 95. My 2002 KLR with the sidecar and stock gearing gets about 38-42 mpg.
