Coolant Type

Ok, for reals yall! No one's actually answered this yet because we always wander off into someth......ohhhhh shiny.
So, I've been swamped with getting ready for baby stuff and haven't had a chance to swap out my seals yet, but need to top off the coolant. Soooooo....
What coolant do I need to use? Thanks.
/cheers

Thats a good question.
Last time around when i did the thermo bob I used a regular antifreeze suitable for aluminum engines...did I make a mistake....should I have used a motorcycle specific coolant....inquiring minds want to know.

What happened? Did the coolant have silicates that affected the seals?

I have been using coolant for aluminum engines with no problems. It may be a 'silicate free' variety; I can't honestly remember.

No, nothing happened but its always in the back of my mind that maybe there's a reason motorcycle coolant is blue and car coolant is green..

In aviation the color of the fuel indicates the type and grade.
Ie: 100low lead is blue, 100 regular is green, jet fuel is yellow and 80/90 (car gas) is magenta.

Glad to know I don't have an imminent failure waiting to happen.

The coolant that came in my 2009 is green. I checked it before Winter storage last year. Spill a drop of that stuff anywhere on the tank or fairings and you'll smell it for two weeks when you ride.

I'm pretty coolant ignorant. So, basically, I'm not picking up what yall are throwin down. Should I just head to the dealer and grab some there or can I use my Autozone gift card before it expires?

I know I used MC specific coolant, but can't remember what it was. Sorry.

Actually, I just realized that I need to go by the dealers anyway to pick up my seal kit. So, might as well snag some coolant while I'm there. Prolly costs a hair more, but peace of mind, lack of a trip elsewhere, etc.
BTW. I just picked up a very sweet 85 Jetta GLI to toy with, so I should be able to keep the KLR. /win!

You know what, I been thinking about it. I think I used regular old cheap as it comes coolant. I'm tripping. Sorry. I know, this has been super helpful. Why I stayed out of it until now.
