oil filter cover gasket

Greetings all,

When you-all do an oil change, do you also always install a new rubber gasket around the oil-filter cover? So far I've done three oil changes and have not yet changed that gasket, and I've had no issues. But maybe I've just been lucky?

If you do change the gasket, where do you get them?... the OEM version from a dealer, or is there an after-market version that's cheaper from some other vendor?

Many thanks as always

Don't need to change it unless it's ripped.

Haven't changed mine - it's already a tight fit.

I've got about 15 changes done and ahve never changed the o-ring.

There was a time when the Fram filter came with a replacement o-ring. Don't know if it still does as I don't use them. Be aware that there were some fit problems with Frams reported. They were either too short or too long.

What Spec said.

Thanks you all for the replies. Guess I won't worry about it unless I have to.

Much appreciated

I just recently replaced the o-ring in the cover when it started leaking after 52k miles. The o-ring was flat around the outside and was no longer sealing very well. I just happened to have an extra o-ring from a Fram filter that I bought years ago but never used. All should be well for another 50k.

Wix oil filter 24951. Comes with two o rings, one fits the KLR, the other? Change it every time.

Gray-haired riders don’t get that way from pure luck.

I haven't changed mine for quite some time but do have a Wix filter on hand in case I need to. Wix comes with them otherwise I use the Hi-Flo.

They cost between 4 and 5 bucks at my dealer. I picked up a few so I would have them on hand just in case.

I get mine from Bike Bandit. They have a good stash of OEM parts. However, their shipping is big money, so plan ahead and buy all the stuff you need at once, so the $8.95 ground shipping cost can be spread out over your whole purchase. My dealer seems to get the little things wrong. They have never got a crush washer size right. Bike Bandit has never done me wrong on OEM parts.
