Dead Turn Signal - What Gauge Wire to Use

I had a series of get-offs this weekend that led to a shorted front right turn signal. The rectifier holder bent and clamped a bit onto a bit of the wiring harness, or so that's how it appears. Anyway, do I need 16 or 18 gauge wire to replace it with?
