supermoto 17" wheel conversion, done it?

I am getting ready to buy rims to lace up some wide 17" front and rear rims for my '08 KLR650. Who had done this and how wide were the rims you used?. I want a 120/70/17 on front, so a 3.5" rim there, but the rear, I am guessing a 4 or 4.5" rim. I don't want to go too wide and have chain/swingarm rubbing issues. If you have done a supermoto conversion, please state rim and tire size used. Thanks. DK

know them well, they did my 19" front. I am after rim widths and max rear tire size with no chain/swingarm rubbing. Most run 150/60/17s , but with semi 0ff-road type tires that may have a different radius than a sport bike tire.

If I was tarding my KLR, I'd probably run a 4.25" with a 150/60 out back.

That's the size I'm running on my DR650, while I'd like to have the additional tire choices in a 160/60, on a 5", I'm just not sure I have the clearance, and I believe the KLR is in a similar place. FTR, BT-003RS hooks up remarkably well offroad so long as you can manage to avoid anything muddy.

My '06 with a 12/90/17 Kenda K761 mounted on a stock 2.5" wide rear rim laced to a KLR600 hub. About 1/4" clearance on each side of the tire from the forks. I don't think of it as a supermoto tho. My reasoning was that if I ever took a long trip and needed a new front or rear tire, front and rear tires would be pretty much interchangeable.

Here's a shot with a knobbie (sort of).
