Doohickamagigy

Have a 2012 KLR. Does anyone know if the doohicky needs to be updated?

I have a 2011, I did do mine at 3100m but only because after I adjusted my tensioner it wouldn't adjust. Found the spring was long. I would recommend riding it and not worrying to much. When you go to adjust your tensioner you'll be able to hear by the tone and feel by the vibration of the engine if you need to replace. As far as I have seen and heard there have been no doohickey failures where the actually doohickey had broken like has happened in some Gen 1s. There are certain individuals on the NET that may say its a timebomb. Don't stress about it, ride and get to know the bike and have fun. Plus, you have a year warranty, let Kawi worry about it of anything pops up. Whenever you do choose to take a peek, if you choose to replace it, use Eagle Mike stuff. It's top notch

If your asking if the Gen 2 Doo will fit your 2012, the answer is yup. If you're asking if your existing Doo needs replaced, the answer is nope. I'm going with my first answer.

I have done mine on my 08 after 15000km and it still had a bit of tension but it was just more of a piece of mind for me so now I don't worry about failure with it

No known failures of doohickey levers for five production years (2008-2012).

No known component failures traceable to OEM doohickeys for the last five production years.

Spring tension bears watching, but . . . why replace a proven durable and reliable part (OEM Generation 2 doohickey)?

I'm not saying, "DON'T replace your Generation 2 stock doohickey," I'm only asking . . . "Why?"

Better fit and finish, but--better maintenance history? Hard to imagine, with the factory part's track record.

I did at 1244 mi for the peace of mind.
The thing had no useful tension in it from the first attempted
adjustment/ snugging of the chain.

Do they break? No, just a lotta clatter when the tension is gone.
I think the spring alone can be changed without "doohickey" tools.
(flywheel puller and a 23mm with 4 +/- inch offset)

Another vote for Eagle Mike (and that's coming from a machinist/
metallurgic lab tech) Excellent part and two extra springs.

Then you're not as cheap as your username suggests! Spending $ 30 for a part with no failures nor associated malfunctions in five years of production (Generation 2) seems extravagant.

Tension appears a function of the spring, not the lever, to me. A stock lever and a proper spring should provide appropriate torque to the eccentric shaft when adjusting balancer chain tension, seems to me.

From what do you enjoy "peace of mind," with your aftermarket doohickey lever? Just askin', I'm NOT saying replacement of doohickeys is unjustified for Generation 2 KLR650's, and I acknowledge better fit and finish from the replacement parts.
