Oil Filter question

Help me out here. This is my first bike with a cartridge filter like this in the side. How do I prevent making a mess when I open the cover and pull it out? I see there is what looks like a drain at the bottom of the case directly below the filter, but not knowing I don't want to start removing things I do not know about yet.

P.S. I am thinking to add the round oil filter magnet I have seen and a mag drain plug too. What do you think?

go to NAPA buy this part number NCB 18609, worth it many uses look it up on www


watch how your filter comes out with metal deal, pay attention but it only goes in one way but i can force anything with my hammer set lol

get bike up N.O.T. (normal opperating temp)and drain oil on side stand, remove bolts, put form a funnel under filter side cover, aim to please or please aim?, simple and easy. hose off are with brake cleaner, redo all ablove top off with oil. finish IPA done

I just hold a big wad of paper towels under the cover when I take it off and then when I pull the filter out. I then use another wad of paper towels to soak up the oil that remains in the hole.

Definitely don't forget to put the metal tube thing back through the center of the oil filter and make sure the correct end goes toward the engine. From what I understand, if you put the filter in without that tube, it will result in your engine oil not passing through the filter at all.

I use a magnetic drain plug, but there's never anything on it when I pull it out. Figure it can't hurt to use one. On that note, if you don't have a torque wrench, be careful with that oil drain plug and don't strip the threads. Also, the two small bolts that hold the oil filter cover on just need to be snugged down. No reason to crank on them and risk damage.

I did a change at 20 miles and just had towels and rags ready, but I just thought there must be something I am missing. And yes, I got the center flow tube thing figured out. At least that is in the manual. That is one poorly written booklet. I have not got time time yet, or find a full service manual to review a lot of the parts. Like to know what and where things are. Have some of it figured out.
Since changing the elcheapo oil out again pretty quick I thought someone might know of the secret filter drain. Gonna run another batch of basic Valvoline 10/40 and then change to higher quality before I take off anywhere. Still doing short variable speed breakin rides.
Oh yeah, am pretty good with drain plugs. Not into cross threading things.

You can minimize oil mess from changing the filter by allowing the filter to drain; i.e., leave a considerable period of down time before you remove the filter (the sump oil, conversely, should be drained warm, soon after engine operation).

And, you can kinda let the bike lean inwardly while the filter drains, and when you remove the filter.

A few shop towels can be dedicated to the task!

Thanks, things were a lot neater this time. While the bike was draining after warming up, I many times leaned the bike to the right (filter side) and when put back to the left I kept getting more streams of oil out, seemed to work good and the bike required a bit more oil this time when I replaced. Still got a little oil down the side of the motor but nothing a little wipe and cleaner after sealing everything back up didn't take care of.
