Will after all this time I'm finally gonna do the Doo tomorrow. I've got the Eagle Mike kit with torsion spring. I've got a set of home made tools thanks to 19willys51 sharing some dimensions with me. Any last minute advise would be welcome :).

Well, she’s done, went pretty smooth. I did take my time, thanks ArcticKLR. My only problem was installing the torsion spring. Instructions say don’t use needle nose pliers, but I could see no other way. I did soften the jaws with a couple of layers of shop rag. It seems the main reason not to use pliers is to not mar the spring, I didn’t mar the spring.

My question for anyone who may know or have an opinion is why not use both types of springs, it doesn’t seem to me like they would conflict with each other, only help?

The stock lever did look like a nice forged part to me. Yes it didn’t fit as nice as the Eagle lever, but I’m not convinced that’s necessary, as there has not been a documented failure. The spring was another thing, 3434 miles on the clock and it was done.

I can definitely hear the difference in the motor, seems some of the tractor noises are gone, not all.

My bike is an 08 and it did have the deep hole in the side cover. In my opinion if you have an 08 or early 09 you should address this ASAP. Eagle included a bushing for this fix with the kit, sweet.

I must say, even though I’ve never done one before, this was very familiar territory. Thanks to all who have written and posted videos about the Doo.

Thanks Guys.

I did my 08 Doo a few months back and now it has a terrible whine. Not sure what it is. What is the deep hole you speak of? Maybe that has something to do with the noise. It sounds like my starter is spinning all the time but I tore it down yesturday and the starter gear turns so I know it's not that. My bike sounds worse then before but I have put 1000 km on and it's fine. Just loud.

Thoughts???

I have only gone for a few test rides, and I am no expert by any means. There is my disclaimer. My bike does have a bit of a wine now, but it's not that load. It sounds to me like the chain is under a bit of tension, I am sure I could hear the loose chain before fix. The wine is a good thing to me. Again my wine is not load at all, so can't compare to yours. Maybe someone else has an idea. Hard to tell with out actually hearing it.

There is a deep hole in the side case which would allow the dowel which the gears run on to potentially disengage. You just need to drop in a little bushing or equivalent to prevent that from happening. This is concerning the starter gear set, so it's highly unlikely the cause of you noise.

Ok well I don't think I have an issue with the deep hole problem. Everything there works perfect. What would the problem be if the deep hole was causing issues? I thought the starter gear was always spinning and that was the noise but the took the cover off and the could spin the flywheel free of the starter gear so I know when the bike is running the starter isn't. The sound does sound like alot of tension on the chain inside. So if that's what it is, is that bad. It runs great and smooth. Just load when ya knee down. No different sound when you riding it. Maybe it's not that bad, it's just a sound I never had before.

I'm not a mechanic, so this is pure conjecture but I wonder if the whine is from the tensioner chain itself actually being tight against the gears. I noticed a whine right off the bat after I did the doo, but then it went away after a few Hundred miles. Could the chain be too tight? Not sure, however it seems to loosen after a bit so I do not think it is so tight it is causing damage. Seems to me a loose Chain would cause more damage than a well lubricated snug one. If there is anyone out there with more experience, (which isn't too much ;-) can show I am wrong I will gladly recant. Always willing to learn, just passing on my experience doing.

After completing the Doo, my '04 had a whine sound as well. It went away after a couple of rides and is still running great now.

I figured it was because my old spring was sheared off and there was no tension in the chain until I did the doo. I wouldn't worry about it too much.....just another 'neat' noise that the KLR makes!
