GPS Speedometer Check

Somewhere in here I recently read about the speedometers on these bikes checking out at about 10% high - e.g. - it reads 50 mph, you're really going 45.

Ahhh.....think it was on Watt man's site in his speedometer calibration page.

I put my GPS mount on the handlebars yesterday, so when I got it back together this morning I popped the GPS on it and went for a ride. Turns out it's not quite that easy.

Holding an absolutely steady speed while watching the road and traffic, keeping an eye on the GPS, watching speedometer......it ain't easy. As best I can figure on my 2011, it's a consistent 1 to 2 mph high. When it says 55, I'm really going 53 to 53 mph. 30 mph would show as 28 to 28 on the GPS.

I think I can live with that................Lar.

Normally there is much more difference than that from what I have found. Not that it makes that much difference , I ride a few above all the time anyway.....and watch the GPS. Plus I have a Vapor now that is 1.5kms out at 100kph....so not too bad IMHO....lol.

I don't know how accurate they but the "your speed" signs show me about 5mph high in the 30-35 mph range.

It'll be interesting to see what they clock me at if I ever see one. Haven't seen one here yet in the 3 years I've been here.

When my speedometer shows 70 mph, my GPS shows about 67 mph. Doesn't really bother me, because most of the time, I'm not really paying close attention to the speed - I'm just keeping up with traffic.

Speedometer reading

My 2011 shows about same. ( 1 - 1 1/2 mph higher than the GPS. )
Radar wagons seem to show about the same error as the gps, when I run by them.

If I run above 60 - 70 mph, it seems to be off by maybe 2 mph.
At lower speeds, the error is slightly less.

When new '08 with the stock tires mine was off exactly 10 percent as others have noted. When I put the Avon Gripsters on it was a little closer but not by much. I now have the Shinko's on it and haven't checked. The front tires circumference is part of the reason, not sure about the calibration of the speedo itself.

I've never checked mine against a GPS, but based on traffic flow and those roadside trailers that check speed prior to construction zones, etc. I estimate mine at being off about 5% or so. Shinko 244's. About the only time I pay any attention to my speedometer is when I'm riding around in town.

Bifilar, ck out the program at gearingcommander.com. They have a really good program that already has the KLR gearing in there that let's u enter the rpm, sprocket size, different tire size, etc & gives u the actual speed ur Re capable if at that rpm. I found my speedo is off about 3-5% up to about 90 mph. Phil
