New KLR rider

HI all
Im new to riding and have decided to start off on a 2010 klr650.
So far im loving the bike.
I have two questions for riders that are more familiar with it.

Firstly when in 1st gear the bike doesnt really seem to want to rev high.
i realise its not high revving machine but i just dont know if that is normal.
when i go into second and accelerate it takes off really well. it only has 7000kms(yes im from australia) i think thats around 4500 miles
Is that normal?

and secondly i only noticed tonight as it was my first night ride.
the neutral light kind of stays on if im riding slow.
kind of dim but then when i accelerate it turns off. when i slow down to a stop it lights up dimly again... i never noticed it before since ive only done rides during the day..... is that also normal?

hope to hear from some one who knows these machines better than me!!!
thanks

How many rpm's is it reaching before you shift?
Keep in mind that the KLR is a big bore thumper and does better if you allow the bike to pull out of the lower rpm range. My bike is put away for the winter but if memory serves me i'm shifting up to the next gear at around 2500-3000rpm and maybe sooner, though i will let it wind up to around 4000-5000 before shifting if i'm riding real agressively.
As far as the Neutral light, i have no idea.

hey!

when i first started riding i was changing pretty early 2500 as i started getting used to it i started going a bit higher around 4 to 5000.

it might be normal but it just doesnt have the same sort of acceleration as second gear for example.
when i go from first to second and open the throttle it picks up pretty quickly.
I expected 1st to have the same sort of acceleration.

The bikes going into Australia are detuned by drilling the slide, so it doesn't want to rev above about 5K rpm, ( klrworld.com/forums/your-next-generation-klr650/08-engine-restriction/[/url] )look midway down the page and you'll see a picture of the extra holes added to the slide, fill with epoxy and sand smooth and then it will be able to rev.

Regards,
Kent

First welcome to the club!

As far as the neutral light, it should only be on when actually in neutral. Your clutch may be making the tranny float between the gears and not fully engage. Try adjusting the clutch at the bars and see if it goes away as well as gifts better.
