New klr650 chain erratic tension change

Hello all....

I'm a newer kl650 owner and am loving it!

However, I am currently struggling with a minor issue......
I recently was forced to start all over with new front, rear sprockets and chain because of previous tension issues. After changing everything out and riding only 600 miles , I noticed the chain was very slacked . I assumed it was due to being a new chain and just needed tightening?

After tightening the chain , checking tension and then securing everything, I now notice my chain changes tension as I roll the bike forward and reverse in neutral??? The marks on the tension guage are the same and there I checked the tension while sitting on the bike before I tighened the hub bolt up, as well!

just don't know what is going on or what to check next?

Please advise....

Put the rear tire up in the air and spin it many times to get a better idea.
Are you sure they're all 520? Using the correct ML with the chain?

Savage,

Thanks for the quick reply!
Yes , I do know the chains are all 520-106 chains and I used the master link that came with the new chain , in the box!
I bought a 'bike master' chain that cost about $38.00. I was trying to save some cash but thought it would last alittle longer than it did? I am not sure if it's gone bad after only 600 miles or not?
I will try to suspend the raer tire in the air to do one more tension check , maybe that will help!

Hey,

I DID install the new front sprocket with a 16 tooth instead of the stock sized one when I did a total new replacement.

I am wondering if that has any affect one chain tension changes?

Sprocket wouldn't cause problem. Check runout on sprockets to make sure they are true, check rollers on chain to see if they are loose on pins, this would indicate worn chain. Good luck

I know this will sound like a stupid question but I have to ask, are you torquing the axle bolt correctly?

Not sure about the quality of the Bike Master chain. Doesn't look like an o-ring chain so don't expect it to last long.

X's 2 on this one! I use Renthal chains and get around 10,000 to 12,000 miles out of them. And I only have to adjust them about every 1,500 miles.
(if I leave one sprocket on)

I am torquing the chain axle bolt to 72 lbs. I think I found that spec somewhere online.
