Speedometer Stopped Working Mid-Ride

Anybody ever have this happen to them? Looking for some troubleshooting strategies.

Undo the connection at the hub and manually turn the cable. Does the speedo move? If yes something is wrong with the speedo drive gear in the hub. If no pull out the inner cable and inspect.

By "stopped working" you mean "went to zero and stayed there"?

Once the cable just fell out of the back of the head on my bike. Got myself a free couple miles, there.

If that happened, it doesn't have to be cinched on super-tight, but hand-tight for me just wasn't quite enough. I used some pliers for just a tad past hand-tight.

Otherwise, the cable could have broken (?), or something in the mechanism at the hub. If you unscrew the cable from the back of the console then roll the bike back and forth by hand, can you see the speedo cable rotate in the housing?

I obviously mean "speedometer head" here; my bike mods aren't *that* wacky.

Ya, same happened to me. The speedo cable loosened off from the back of the speedo head and stopped working. I started by checking everything else and then when I finally found it gave my forehead a slap. Nearly had the wheel off. Anyway I put a couple of tie wraps around it and it hasn't happened again.

The same thing happened to me when the bike was new to me. I was totally taken by surprise. Fortunately a riding buddy saw the problem, the nut had come loose.

I see your riding an 08? Mine snapped the cable at about 10,000 km's (6,250 miles). When I took it apart I noticed that there was pretty much zero lube on the cable. Lubed the heck out of the new cable before I installed it. Mine broke right where it bends after the wheel drive hub. Grease must be a pretty precious commodity at Kawasaki because they sure don't use much of it!

finally got a chance to inspect. turns out that little gear that fits next to the wheel bearing had both its flanges bent back pretty far. far enough that it was just sliding around freely inside that little cup thing at the hub... Bike Bandit, here I come. Thanks all.
