2nd owner KLR 1000 miles?

I've picked up a 2012 KLR that now has 1000 miles. 800 of thos miles were from the original owner. I was wanting a little advice whether i should just change the oil and start fresh or wait until the next interval? I'm not sure what the break in was like either?

Thanks

I would absolutely change the oil and filter ASAP. Then I'd do it again after 1500 miles, and then do how you do. I'm a little anal. Oil is cheap. Engines are not.

But, yeah, start with new oil. And welcome.

I agree with the others, I changed the oil and filter on my 2013 at 25 miles then again at 500 miles. I will complete my next oil/filter change at 1500 miles then do a routine oil/filter change every 2500-3000.

I changed the oil and filter at 500 miles, next will be at 1000 miles, then at 2500 miles, and then I'll continue at intervals of 2500 to 3000 miles depending on my riding style.

I was in the same boat --- 2011 with about 800 miles on it.

I went ahead and changed the oil/filter right away...just in case.

I took your advice and got the oil changed. Thanks for what I was thinking I would do.

I was gonna say, make sure that metal tube that goes inside the filter is still there and wasn't accidentally tossed out with the old filter by the first owner. It's been known to happen.

Do It

Change it...and then change it every 1000 to 1500 miles...It will look like creek mud by 1500 miles and its to cheap to not change often. Rotella 15-40 is my brand.

When you say "got" the oil changed...someone else did it? I mention this only because changing the oil is about as complicated as making scrambled eggs. Less. I'm not a mechanically inclined guy, but it is easy as pie. And you'll do it better. 5 minute job.

Also, despite the manual saying the oil level in the sight window should be between the lines (which it SHOULD), the oil level should go to the very top of the window with the bike vertical.

Seriously, though. Oil changes are easy. Kind of fun even. Just don't strip any bolts and you're good.

Since someone else did the change, you might want to check that the level is at the top of the window and not in the middle. You have the master engineers at Kawi to thank for that.
