IMHO......it doesn't matter what year besides the 08 you buy, I would put the cost of a 685 kit aside as in the acutal cost of buying the bike if you need to just in case. You may never need to install the kit but if you do, the funds will be there and it may not hurt as bad? It's a bad way to think about it, but from what I have experienced many still do drink oil when used on the highway for extended periods. The gen I bikes didn't do this unless thrashed from what I have experienced. When they changed the piston and rings for the new generation they somehow screwed things up....how and why I can't say. There is some proof that the rings don't seat perfectly in the bore near the gap in the rings, some say the bore isn't perfectly round or has inperfections after time used. Some say the sleeve develops imperfections due to heat warpages or incorrect heat cycling. Some say it could be improper break in proceedures.
It doesn't matter what causes this issue the factory has said that until you drink so may cc's per 1000kms or miles this is normal....go figure?
If I were going to buy an 08 and up machine I would also have the funds for a 685 kit already set aside or already purchase the kit ready for when it is needed. Some will say I'm stupid for even saying this, but after installing 30 plus kits to date and 99% of the newer gen bikes for oil burning reasons....I see the proof.
As I said before some with much more experience with doing the work on the KLR will chime in and say different I'm sure.
