free mod lean question

so im looking at buying exhaust/modding the stock right now. i like Loud, i ride with a lots of harleys and rockets that are stupid loud and im sick of riding not hearing my bike.. plus i believe a loud bike is a safe bike...

i heard a little snippit in this video that i think i might like. after he cut the 2 1/4 hole out of the end and before he puts the end cap on i think i would like that, just a big hole...

a. is this ok? do i need a spark arrester/end cap? will it lose to much back pressure?

b. if i cut the L mod AND try to do the .22 mod (OR KLX needle) in addition to the exhuast, will that lean the 'lean machine' to much??

i really know nothing about this stuff, gearing up for the first oil change, waiting for my magnetic drain plug to come in. i have no shops around here that sell the filter for under $11 so i ordered one with the plug, for $12....shipped. sucks

How much do you like talking to cops? In all seriousness, though...this sounds like a bad idea. Loud bikes aren't safer, they're louder. And they make people angry. And that hurts all of us. But that's a whole nother can of worms.

I would stick with what you got at least until you have a little more feel for the bike. My .02

I cut the big hole in mine as you can see in the below photo. I mostly did it in conjunction with the .22 Mod as these mods are reputed to compliment each other and I believe they do. It's not really any louder than before; just sounds different with that baffle thing removed, more like a motorcycle than a lawn tractor.

I don't think you're really removing any of the muffler's noise attenuation features by cutting out that baffle.

So, if you're just looking for louder, you probably won't be happy with this particular exhaust mod.

LOVE IT. So it prolly sounds a little deeper then? Yeah, getting rid of the lawn mower effect is good, stupid loud, prolly not, between the harleys and rockets I ride with, I just want some juu juu too lol I think the bigger diameter tip will get a lower sound... So exhaust,. 22, and L mod require no re jet right? That's all I want to do to the engine

USDA-approved SPARK ARRESTORS are required on National Forests, RiceInjected, perhaps on other public lands, also.

Further, I doubt ANY aftermarket exhaust on a KLR would elevate that vehicle to a level impressing your Harley friends . . .

I don't have any forests or anything like that around me. If it helps give the needed back pressure then I'd go for it, I also seen an awesome idea. Some loon put a bright red glass pack on it, that's awesome! My dad and good friend have 1200 with screaming eagle short pipes, and the fuzz don't bother them or any other hot rod, 4x4,or import that insanely loud, i dont think a klr with a open header would be louder than their 1200s..... Klr is ugly, and unique, that's why I love it, a cherry bomb would be perfect lol

If I wanted to go fast, I would have kept my 636....or my f3. I get that all of this klr forum community don't like loud exhaust, i read the cherry bomb dudes thread, it's cool. I should have a video in a week or so with results. Hopefully I'll have the L and the. 22 done by then too... And the oil lol

I'm going to leave the stock pipe alone so when you guys me wrong I can put it back on lol

Cheers!

When you do the so called "L" mod, do it using a small hole step saw or drill bit. It will allow you to reverse it if you ever want to. You never know. Plus if you can't get the mixture right you can cut the air down a bit to help by using plugsto fill the holes.
If you want loud or almost loud, think Stupercrap slip-on....they from what I have seen are the loudest slip on out there. They usually come up for sale for just that reason, people think it will be semi quiet and then find out how loud they are and sell it off asap. But if you are seeking loud, your gain.
I personally am firmly in the keep it quiet camp as not to upset the apple cart and get us banned from more places etc. But to each their own.
As for the spark arrester issue, if you do the cheap exhaust mod my way it won't take it out and you'll be good to go. But if you do cut a 2 1/8th hole or larger you will remove the last baffle system from the can and then that also removes the spark arrester from the can and you will need to add a screen to the end tip to pass any inspections you may fall into.

Have fun......
