OK. New KLR 2013 now what?

I pick up my new 13' KLR tomorrow.... Where do I start with stuffs. Is there anything critical that I might want to do with my bike before I get all caught up on this "farkle" stuff?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Phil, Phil, Phil --you delicously naive fool.

Get on that bike and ride it like it was a stolen 1993. Then, when it's appropriately dirty, sit yourself in front of your PC or Mac and start using the search function.

I promise you that every question in your pretty little head has been asked-- and answered--by smarter and handsomer KLR riders.

Welcome to the forum!

I think I was more so thinking.... engine cage and the like... believe me I'll ride the **** out of it. I also don't want to get a big whoops on a less than month old bike.

I won't go into engine brake in theories except to say you want to seat the rings so avoid prolonged steady throttle.

Change the oil and filter fairly soon like at about 100 miles. There is gunk inside a new motor, i.e. metal chips, assembly adhesives, etc. don't want those ciruclating around too long. If the filter comes out with lots of stuff trapped on it change the oil and filter again at about 500 miles.

Good idea to use blue loctite on all the fasteners you can get to now vs. after they loosen up on their own!

Usually dealers set the chain too tight. Touching the bottom of the swingarm is a good check

exactly the info I was looking for! Thank you.

I am assuming oil changes are fairly easy... They recommended they do it... of course. I have done them on my harley with no issues.

The first thing I did was install SW Motec crash bars. Kept it looking good after a highway laydown. BarkBusters are a good idea too. Then a better seat like a Sargent....then....

I'm 1+ month with new "used" 2009 KLR. To feel comfortable riding gravel roads I bought MS-Motech crashbars and skid plate. I was too nervous - for my bike - that I'd hurt it without those items added. Hell, I think KLRs should come standard with that stuff installed!

Had my bike out in the sand for the first time this weekend. Yikes! That's when you realize what a big bike the KLR is. Fun though and good for balance!

I say order some type of crash bar and skid plate. While it's being delivered go ride the hell out of your bike on the road.

I bet the doohickey can wait for the winter. Mine is anyways...

Replacing that front sprocket if you plan on much slab riding.....Really cuts down the RPM's...
