Noise....

So, I bought a used KLR, it sounded nice, started easily with a cold engine, seemed well maintained. When riding home though, I noticed that after a while on highway speed the bike would make some very soft cyclic noise (sHss... SHss). Is that normal?

Engine wise so far nothing else seems wrong aside from the very rare rattling once in a while when I start accelerating (which I'm used to from my 250 bike, I imagine it's because it only has 1 cylinder).

Any insights would be appreciated, thanks.

Your description of your engine noise is similiar to what I sometimes I hear on mine when the engine's hot and I forget to put in earplugs. It seems to emanate from the left side of the engine and the sound suggests either the camshaft chain or the balancer chain. I would describe mine as a "swishing" sound.

I don't know if it has something to do with increased clearances due to the heat, the thinning of the oil or what. My personal and unproven theory is that hot metal transmits sound more efficiently than cold metal.

I assume my camshaft and balancer chain tensioners are working properly because it's done it since I bought it, it hasn't gotten worse and nothing has happened yet.

Especially depending on your KLR's age and miles, you might want to find out if the doohickey has been upgraded and at least go through the adjustment procedure on it if you don't know if that's been done. The adjustment procedure is very simple.

As far as the rattling goes, are you sure you're not shifting into a higher gear too early?

I adhere to the adage passed down from my Dad that "the worst thing you can do to an engine is lug it down," therefore I usually run up to 4000-4500 rpm's before I shift. Just personal preference tho.......

Kind of, generally happens when I'm on 5th gear and let the revs go down a bit to slow down, but not enough to justify downshifting. Your dad seems to be right.

Edited: I'm sending it to a mechanic very soon for him to take a look, I don't think there is anything major wrong, but a 31 dollars clutch has caused me major problems in my life already, had to miss classes and push my bike uphill to a unlimited motorbike parking place because of it. Carrying a spare one from now on.

As this guy can attest, carrying a spare bike is a Herculean and back-breaking endeavour on foot. I can't imagine what it would be like to ride with a spare on my back.

All joking aside, I'd be interested in hearing what your mechanic thinks it is.

our engines are noisy to begin with and add heat and lugging in top gear it makes noises..

its when its at an idle and still hearing chain slap in the case that worries me .. both times it was a broken chain tensioner spring (doohickey).

Sounds a lot like the noise my bike makes. It has 40,000 k (24000miles) on it but the engine still pulls like a trooper and does not skip a beat so I assume all is well.

I remember my old Honda twins were like that when hot. When we would go to an area where you could go without a helmet I would try it but always put mine back on because I hated the engine noise.

I get a similar noise when backing out of the throttle at slower speeds and then picking it back up, think the noise is from chain being unloaded then loaded and rubbing briefly on runners or guide.
