Wear Inside Oil Filter Housing

I noticed this the last time I changed my filter but forgot to take a picture. I got one today. I'm not sure what to call it besides "wear" or "damage." I think it's gotten worse since last time. Anybody else see this on theirs? Can't figure out how or why this would happen: looks like somebody took a piece of sandpaper to it or something.

Oil filter has never been installed without the tube.

It wasn't like this when it was new: that surface was all nice and shiny. I've just noticed it over the last couple of filter changes.

What kind of oil are you using? No I'm not turning this into an oil thread.

Almost looks like some kind of metal attack rather than wear.

When you put the tube in, is it in the right direction and seating correctly?

I use RotellaT 15w/40: all I've ever used.

As far as I know: small end in. Is it possible to put it in backwards? I thought if it was backwards nothing would fit together and the filter cover wouldn't go back on.

I thought maybe the metal lip on the end of the filters had been banging against it, but I figured the tube kind of "suspended" the filter in the center of the housing so it couldn't touch the sides.

For what it's worth, I've been using the cheap EMGO filters. I don't think that's what it is, though, because the damaged area is much wider than the metal lip/ring on the outside end of the filter.

Disclaimer--every other Kawi I've owned has had a spin on filter....

But was looking at Clymer for my '03 & they had a caution about seating the filter grommets on the large diameter of the oil pipe/pressure relief valve vs on the smaller part of the pipe. Is it possible to assemble the unit so the filter is in too deep and the grommet is loose on the smaller diameter of the pipe? Almost looks like something is rattling around in the housing(?)

Odd, the only thing I could think of is if some metal is suspended in your oil and going through there nicking it up.

Does the emgo come with the two rubber parts at each end of the filter? I use Kawi filters but I think some others don't include the rubber parts so you have to save them each time.
