Running hot?

Can the temp gage read normal and the engine run hot?. Maybe I'm just paranoid but when I park the bike it "smells" hot. Not coolant smell, but just hot smelling. Bike seems to be running great. It's a 2012 with 2300 miles. Oil level is perfect. Temp gage only climbs at a stop. I've only felt the fan kick on a few times this summer. One of the times was on purpose to make sure it was working.

Thx,
RedPill

Is the fan coming on when this apparent engine hot smell comes around? If not I think it's your nose.

Nope the fan is not on when I'm smelling the smell. The temp guage is also normal.

Hi Redpill!
You are likely smelling the heat off the hot exhaust system. Your description of how the cooling system is acting sounds normal to me.

Thanks for the quick replies. I'm not going to worry about it. I'm sure it's fine.

Thanks again

Mine smells the same way when I push it into the basement after riding home from work. I agree with justjeff that it's only the hot exhaust and muffler.

How 'bout the temp gauge at a stop light? Thank goodness the light changed. It was going up a little fast for me. Paranoid ?

Yup! Temps rise as airflow stops and heated metal transfers heat to the coolant. The fan will kick in and take care of it.

I've had rides on a hot, windy day where if I was riding into the wind, the temp guage was barely above the bottom line, but riding with the wind, it was running at the halfway point on the guage.
