on a recent desert ride on the trails I ran out of adjustment on the throttle cables just flat stretched out ..to the point I separated the adjuster from housing ..
ive got 20kmiles on the 2012 ,but of all bikes ive owned never stretched out like that before .. ive broken them but usually because they were years old..
anyone know of a better upgrade ?

I carry a spare pull cable for this eventuality, but I should think if they're well-lubed and aren't unnaturally bent around a barkbuster or somesuch, they should last a very long time.
yes they are well lubed with a cable spray that turns ibto a graphite type lube .. you would get a bunch of play in the pull side of cable allowing for almost half urn till it tightens up to pull on carb .. ive adjusted both at carb and on the bars .
while I got enough to get home fully extended but only with 60% throttle .
bike was fully serviced in june .. usually lube controls once a month .because I ride so much in the dirt .
I had a can of graphite lube around here once. It would spray out a liquid then dry to a solid. Is it possible, and this is just a WAG, that the cables are binding internally and wadding up inside the twist grip?
I can only 'suggest' that By Now, Motion Pro would be supplying After Market cables for the '08 and Newer KLR. Tucker Rocky, Parts Unlimited, Western Power Sports, etc. Dealers.
I Have 69,002 miles on the Original Throttle cables, on my 1987 -A1. Go figure.
I adjusted mine once to personal preference. That was 14,000 miles ago.
Keep them clean and lubed and they should last the life of the motorcycle.
Beware of over pulling and pushing too hard forward after rolling off the
throttle to prevent stressing out the cables too much. (which I catch myself
doing sometimes too.)

Really depends. You should try to clean them and lube them every here and there. I would say that they're good for about 30k miles. If you don't take care of them and rip on it, definitely the lifespan will go down a lot.
One can always rubber band the corner of a plastic bag onto the cable housing, to make a funnel & let a light oil drain thru.
