Strong Vibration

A week or so ago I made a run of about 30 miles to the northwest of here and on the return trip I was cruising at about 62 - 64 mph and thought I could see a truck in the middle of highway up ahead......but my vision was blurred. Thought I had dirty glasses, but then had an idea.

I pulled in the clutch, let the motor go to idle while coasting and my vision cleared right up. That truck was a county truck parked on the shoulder with its flashers on.

This is not good. There's heavy vibration coming from "somewhere" and thinking about it I came up with the idea that maybe I installed the crash bars incorrectly. Today's project was to tear into it and take a look.

Long story a bit shorter, everything was fine - correclty installed - but I came up with a couple of surprises. First was that the front engine mount bolts directly to the frame. Thought there were rubber bushings in there.

Then went to rear of engine and that's bolted solid to frame, too. WTH ?? Am I going nuts ?? I would've sworn that the engine is mounted in anti-vibration mounts. What gives ?? Any ideas ??

Last week I told my ophthalmologist about it and he pitched a fit. About 1 years ago I had a portion of the retina of my right eye laser welded back in place and he says vibration like that can tear it loose again - maybe for good.

Anyone wanna buy a fully farkled KLR ?? (I'd be pleased to take a nice WeeStrom in trade)(only half kidding).............Lars.

Hi BigLar!
You will find the top engine mount is bolted solidly too!
I have never had that amount of vibration from either my '11 or my '03. I wonder if your doo is working properly? Balancer chain slack or balancer out of time would be my best shot at this time. Could be a balancer shaft bearing going bad too. Is this something that started suddenly or has it been doing it for a long time?

When I had my 2008 I bought and installed a set of SW-Motech crash bars. They had such a severe harmonic vibration I took them off and sold them. It was a lower frequency vibration, though, and didn't cause any head buffeting.

I now have a 2013 and have finally solved buffeting issues. In fact, this bike has the best air flow/lack of turbulence of any windshield equipped bike I've ever had. This was the result of a Madstad windshield and Aprilia Tuono mirrors. It did take some trial and error to get the windshield just right, but it was worth the effort!

Since I started this thread I made a 130 mile trip on Tues, part open highway, part mountain roads and I did a lot of experimenting.

Good news for the Kawi, not so good for me......most of the problem seems to be with my eyes and this will need some immediate attention. Sorry for the false alarm................Lar.

Well I would much rather be trying to help you troubleshoot a problem with your bike than YOU. Hope things turn out well. If there is anything I might be able to help with, don't hesitate to ask! Keep in touch.

Best Regards....justjeff

I know this is an old thread, but to help anyone who comes across the blurred vision issue with glasses. I had a pair of glasses that were wide enough inside my full face helmet that the buffeting from the windscreen of my bike created a high frequency vibration in the glasses and blurred my vision. New glasses with a thinner frame left-to-right solved that problem.
