2013 KLR650 Oil leak question

Hey guys. I have a 2013 KLR650, and it was in pristine condition. The other day, a guy backed into it and knocked it over. He left his info and stuff, but that is beside the point. Anyway, part of the damage I noticed was an oil leak coming from the oil drain plug, and when I attempted to tighten it, the bolt just keeps spinning and never actually cinches down. Does this make any sense? When I told the claims adjuster that, he sounded skeptical because he hasnt heard of that before, but this bike is my baby and I am 100% certain there was no issue before. Any thoughts?

Hello and welcome to the forums!

You've got a stripped oil drain plug, not good. I don't see how it getting knocked over could have caused that, it usually occurs from over tightening the plug . The casting is aluminum and strips out easily. Happens pretty often, here's a link to a bunch of different oil plug problems and their repairs.

In order for the accident to have affected the drain plug, the plug would have had to suffered a direct hit. While not impossible it's more likely that someone over tightened it, either previously or just now. It is what it is...

When the technique works, I'm in favor of OVERSIZE OIL DRAIN PLUGS:

I'd try 1026 or 1026M (if magnetic tip is desired).

"If it seals, it heals!"

If an oversize oil drain plug doesn't work, you're no worse off (except for the few dollars the aftermarket plug sets you back). The tapered, self-tapping threads cut a slightly-larger threaded hole upon first insertion.

Doesn't work? Lots of other options exist; drill-and-tap for a larger plug; weld up; use a threaded insert, etc.

Not likely caused by the collision, IMHO.
