Cowling Confusion.

Goodday folks,
Here's a question from Australia that you North Americanos may be able to help me with.
I've got a 2008 KLR, you've seen pictures of it before:

I've banged it about a bit over the last couple of years and on a recent ride part of the fairing, the sort of "wingy" bit that joins the lower fairing just forward of the filler cap, broke off at the fastening.
It was always going to happen as the fatigue cracks had been growing for some time, this last ride was enough to break it. only noticed it missing when I got home.

Anyhow......

I had a bit of a wander around the net and found a mob called " Babbits" over your way who have an excellent web site with lots of exploded diagrams and so on, and I found the part i need:

It looks like part number 55053, the letter after the number seems to designate the colour and the side, left green/black, right silver/black and so on. All priced at $136.51
Hmm, I notice that there's no red.
Okay, so I have a look at the 2009 page :

Ah, there it is. But wait, the part number is now 55028 with a letter after it and the price is significantly lower, $85.45.
The part I want is listed right there " COWLING,UPP,LH,S,RED $85.45"
I don't want to order it and pay the shipping to Australia to find I have the wrong bit.
Is there a mistake somewhere or could the same parts be so much cheaper for an '09 model. I mean really the only thing that's changed is the colour.

Any ideas? Suggestions?

Thanks from North Queensland (bit soggy at the moment, we are experiencing the wet season)

Iddy

They are called the upper cowlings, lft and right, if you call a dealer you can get about any color you want that Kawasaki makes, im pretty sure all of them from 08 up will work. Im switching my bike to black so the cowls are going to cost me $108.00 each side for any color I choose. im not trying to spam you but my reds are for sale because I have to buy black ones.

By the diagram you posted, the part number you need for the left side in red is 55028A. Im not sure why the price is different though, I have seen dealers with prices higher on the same part with a slightly different part number that fits the same years.

here's my post with pictures. if your interested.

Thanks blk09650,
I'm interested.
I've sent you a pm but I'm still not sure about the pricing in that Babbits catalogue.

Yea that makes no sense, I looked at both the 08 and 09, you sure yours is an 08? and not an 09? or maybe you have a very late in the year 08?

I didn't "move or delete" that first image!
Don't know exactly what happened there but if you go to the Babbit's catalogue and compare the pages you will see what I mean.

Anyhoooow,
It's all a bit moot now because I wound up buying both left and right upper cowls from blk09650.

Iddy.

blk09650,
Yep, the little metal plate below the triple tree has "08" stamped on it. And the bike is unarguably red! Must have been one of the first of the new colour scheme.

I have an 08, it had the green upper fairing and silver lowers. I wanted to go all black. I looked at Babbitts site and ordered these panels in black off a newer bike. 12 if I remember right. The only difference I noticed is that on the lower right panel the stud does not line up perfectly with the rubber bushed socket on the bike. But it really doesn't make much difference.. The bolt holes line up so unless you are removing or installing the cowl you don't notice.

Worst day riding is still better than the best day at work.
