2008 Klr tough to start

I've just had my new 2008 KLR for only a few days and find it very difficult to start when cold. Any ideas? I'm afraid it will drain the battery before it starts an leave my stranded...

This mod in the following link made all the world of difference in starting easier for my 07, we are getting ready to do it to my buddies 08. His is a PITA to start when cold too. Mine usually hits the first time.

Angry

Just bought an 08 (green -envinonmental one) and it could hardly start in the winter warmth of Phoenix Arizona on full choke today. How ridiculas. Ive heard it can be fixed by adjusting the cable fitting that is underneath fuel tank!
ID SAY THATS NEARLY A RECALL!!!

Ok.. It's just me, but if I had a brand new bike that was tough to start, the first place I'd ride it is back to the dealer and have it fixed under warranty..

That's what the warranty is for.. Manufacturing defects, and not starting when brand new is definately a manufacturing defect.

Take it back and make them fix it..

Dealer fix

I had the exact same problem as the original poster so I referred it to the dealership.

I got it back two days later and it starts perfectly now.

This is exactly what is says on the computer-printed work order.....

COMPLAINT: UNIT WILL NOT START
CAUSE: NO COMPRESSION
CURE:GRIND DOWN DECOMPRESSION PART OF CAM

The time was listed as 1.3 hours to fix compression and .5 hours to grind down cam. No parts were listed.

Hope this helps.

My red 08 bought monday seems to start even at 30 degrees. But why DXKLR are you only turning the pilot screw out 3/4 of a turn. Think stock is probably 1.5 and after the jet kits some say 2.5 and other's say 3.5. Maybe I read it wrong ?

yeah I turned it out 3/4 more than stock...my stock was 1.5 so I have a total of 2.25 turns out from seated. Sorry for the misunderstanding...Also we checked my plug back a few weeks ago while doing some Maintenance work and it was definately a lil on the rich side. So two turns might be more than enough.

A couple years ago I noticed mine was hard to start, and also felt like it was surging at regular throttle. If I was going on a flat road, at even speed, it would feel like it was dying and then pick up a touch if I just gave it the lightest amount of throttle.

I pulled my little aluminum cap off to find the screw run in at fully seated. I backed it out 2 1/2 turns and it's run like a top since.

tough starting 08

I recently purchased and 08 I was able to ride it two hundred miles home and that was the last time it started. 3 trips back to the dealer (approximately 1200 miles of trailering my 08) they finally discovered that the decompression valve was always open. Since Im dealing with a dealer who knows. I should be able to pick it up this week. I have lost confidence in kawasaki. I have owned many different models throughout the years with absolutly no problems. I ve been reading other posts and this theme keep coming up.

Good luck,
