Transmission Problem?

I have been having a problem with the bike shifting from 1st to 2nd gear, every once in a while it will go from 1st to Neutral, then to 2nd. This seems to happen when I have to stop for a red light and sit for a minute or two. If I do a stop and go, such as a quick stop a stop sign, I don't have any problems. Second problem, is that some times at a long light I try and go from 1st to Neutral, it will not find Neutral, I can get 1st or 2nd only. Is this normal or should I have the dealer look at it? The bike is a new 08 with 450 miles on the clock.

Well, looks like they haven't worked out the tranny issues this year. The 1st to 2nd neutral issue is very well known. Even after getting better at shifting my 06 KLR, I still hit that neutral every now and then. There is another mystery neutral around 4th & 5th also, but is a bit more rare.

I've also experienced your second problem as well. I believe it happens from not downshifting/engine breaking while slowing down, but I'm sure there other explanations.

Basically, the KLR tranny is a clunky ancient piece of technology that has never been refined because Kawasaki probably says "Works good enough".

When those problems happen to me, I blame it on user error. I find the longer I own a particular bike, the less it happens. YMMV

Hmmm...I'm experiencing this too, noticed it yesterday on my first commute to work on the bike, chalked it up to inexperience while shifting as it got better. I find you just need to be very deliberate on the shift, do not just click it casually.

On my CR, I just let of the throttle a little and click the shifter, not really using the clutch. Don't want to do that on the KLR though.

problem seems to get better with more miles. Mine seems to like to hang in second. I have been trying to make more of a conscious effort when approaching a light or stop sign

I've had this issue. I just attributed to me not doing my part correctly.

operator technique has everything to do with it. The constant mesh trannys
need motion (spinning motion) to slide the dogs to the cogs. That's why it helps to ease the clutch out a little as you apply light pressure to the shift pedal if you're sitting still, engine running. Similarly, with the engine dead, you can usually only change a gear or two without rolling the rear wheel a little.

3200 miles on my 08 and I still do it. Anyone think RPMs (too high) have anything to do with it? Or maybe itís just my clutch synchronization (as in rider) is off!
