I'm a few weeks in with 670 miles on my 2016 new with 0 miles off the dealer floor and liking it a lot.
The KLR seems to have a long history of being reliable except for the doohickey but besides that, what other "gotchya's" should I watch for or upgrade?
I'm happy with the performance though it does run lean but having a full 2 year warranty I'm staying away from doing anything that could violate that.
Are you doing your own break-in maintenance or having someone else do it? Either way, one needs to remove the skid plate, side bodywork and fuel tank and check almost every nut, bolt, screw and spoke one can get a wrench on!
Then check and/or adjust cables, chain, doo-hickey, check battery fluid, engine coolant, clean & Re-Oil the air filter properly. (If you haven't already)
Oil & filter change, of course.
As to longer term, some say you should disassemble & re-grease your entire rear suspension after the 1st or 2nd year. Also partially disassemble F. steering head & re-grease the steering bearings at same time.
As to carburation, it doesn't run any leaner than any other Gen2 KLR sold since 2008, (unless plugged jets from storage time) EPA 'lean & clean' approved. Ride it, 0-14,000 feet!
