Stock '08 - How much speedometer error?

I wonder if anyone has calcualted what the typical speedometer error is for a stock '08 at highway speeds?

Has anyone calcualted what the speed should be at 5000 rpm for a stock bike (OEM wheels, tires, sprockets, etc.)?

I'd guess 5-6mph at 60 (typical) but your best bet is to check it against a GPS at steady speeds.

That'll get you within less than 1mph of your actual true speed, and you can check it at a bunch of different speeds so you know what you're actually doing at all the speeds.

I check all my bike and cars so I know what the speedo error is BEFORE I get a ticket..

Mine seems to read about 10% high.

30 = 27 actual
50 = 45 actual
60 = 54 actual
70 = 62 actual
80 = 72 actual

Wylee,

Thanks, that is very helpful. Texas mostly has a 70 mph speed limit on highways and most cops will give you two or three miles per hour over the limit. So I can run 80 mph until I have a chance to check my bike with a GPS and verify my speedometer. Thanks again and ride safely.

Ya know guys, the GPS isn't the most accurate thing to check your speedo with. It will not account for curves and such in the road and they can add up over time. It also will not be quite as accurate as a good stop watch and timing youself. Here in washington the DOT has hash marks painted on the road to help the state patrol aircraft time speeders. They are accurately measured and if you use them to time yourself then no worries. I do agree with Wylee about the 10% thing, that seems to be right where my 07 is at.
