Smile 2008 KLR - thinking of buying one?

Hi,

I joined the forum basically because I am looking to buy an '08 KLR. I am a little hesitant to buy the first year after a model change and was wondering how much has actually changed. Does anyone know or know what I should look out for with a used one? It has less than 1000 miles.

Thanks!!

When looking at a used bike I look for a few things:

1) Over all look of the bike. If it looks abused walk away.
2) With used bikes look to see if the bike has been underwater. Rust, heavy pitting in certain areas.
3) When you show up to look at the bike feel the engine and make sure it is cold or cool to the touch. If it recently has been out and the engine is hot, come back another day. Some bikes have a hard time starting when cold
4) If it passes the above. Start it up and let it run a few minutes. After it warms comepletely up. Shut it off and wait about 20 seconds and start it back up.
5) I tend to shy away from heavy mods......esp the engine. **Unless I know the person and feel as though he knows what he is doing. If is someone I don't know I will not buy a bike with a lot of mods to the engine.
6) If you can't ride the bike ask the guy to drive the bike and you follow with windows down in a car behind him. I think it is understandable to not allow strangers to you to ride your bike. After all if you drop the bike then the value just went down. Have the guy do some intown and a little hwy driving.
7) Look for a clean and clear title.
8) If the bike has been painted I ususally will not buy. Ask yourself why it was painted.

9) Make a check list
lights work
signals work
brakes work
Is everything solid
Speedo works
Shocks.....do they feel funny
Are the wires tapped or do they look stock
is the tire wear ok
Is the rear tire bald and the front brand new?
Does the bike smoke on start up?
When you follow him do you notice smoke on shifts
Check the oil
Ask the guy where the oil filter is

Funny story. I asked a guy who changed the oil on a bike that I was looking at buying. His reply was that he did. He said he changed it every 3000 miles. My next question to him was "where is the oil filter?" and he didn't know. ie the oil was never changed. To make matters worse......he 'misplaced' the key that afternoon so he couldn't start it up. I walked away.

Ha, that's great, thanks.
I think I may have to walk away from this one as there are some issues with the registration and the bank has the title. Great bike, basically brand new and seems like a good deal, but I'm just not comfortable with the paperwork.
